4×4 or AWD?

chris n asked:

I hunt and sometimes the roads I drive on are pretty rough,i have a 4×4 now but im looking for a new auto and the SUV Im looking at is AWD,my question is do you think it will be adequate for deer camp.I do end up in some situations where 4×4 is a neccessity and also we pull some stumps from a swamp on our property,do you think AWD can do those things like my 4X4,thanks

awd and 4×4 function the same except the 4×4 vehicle, you can engage it to 2wd to save gas. you would used 2wd on dry road to increase gas mileage if you drive it easy or normal. if you drive fast, bad road condition, rain,or snow , you would use awd or 4×4 to increase traction and stability

It sounds like you have a legitimate need for a 4×4. My understanding is that AWD is not as durable in situations where one wheel spins and the other pulls the car, such as driving on a muddy dirt road. A 4×4 with a transfer case can handle these situations better. AWD uses hydraulic fluid to send power to the wheels that need it and lots of slipping can overheat the fluid. A 4×4 has a mechanical transfer case with gears. It is heavier, but also heavy duty. In addition, pulling stumps is a job for a truck based SUV.

Consider the ground clearance. AWD is not made for puddle jumping.

I do not reccomend AWD. I, myself think that AWD puts to much wear and tear on the vehicle to have constant power going to all four wheels all the time. You do not want to pull stumps in a all wheel drive because it is not meant for that.
