You don’t hunt deer with a shotgun. Go with someone experienced, and borrow a rifle.

It all depends upon the shotgun you have. Shotguns with scopes and special rifled slug barrels are now capable of taking Deer at ranges up to 150 yards or so. Without a scope, you will be limited to about 50 yards with Foster style slugs in a smoothbore. Do some reading on the subject and practice at the range too. Good Luck.

If your shotgun has a scope, you are using a rifled barrel, and you are extremely accurate, then use a slug round. If not, then the best ammunition to use is simply a “OO Buck” round with nine .38 caliber pellets. I even like to use “OOO Buck”, but that is only eight pellets that are just slightly larger. When deer hunting, though, I have always went with a rifle.
