the answerman asked:
My son is 12, enjoys going hunting with his dad. He jost got his hunter’s safety certificate and would like to bow hunt. I still haven’t decided on what type or how many pounds. He would hunt white-tailed deer.

uh… i guess a compound bow (the ones with the wheels) is better for accuracy cos you don’t have to hold it forever to aim and weight wise, as heavy as he can pull cos you don’t want it to be too weak but not so heavey he can only manage one shot… go to a shop and see if they can help you fit one or seomthign… good hunting!!
there is alot to think about the draw weight is important you need to know what weight is legal to hunt with in your state in texas 85 to 100 grain broadhead is good for deer pse makes good entry level bows but bowtech has a single cam line named diamond wich is a very nice bow and they have youth bows very important is to make sure you get correctly spined arrows for the wight of the bow gold tip make great arrows its woth spending the extra 40 bucks to get a good set of arrows also a single cam bow will be a smoother pull but a double cam bow will give you better speed but remmeber bows today are made for speed so you dont have to get the double cam to get speed diamonds bows will have you covered also get a good adjustable release cobra makes a couple good entry level ones about 30 dollars at acadamy sports and outdoors
My kids bow hunt with myself and hubby. (ages 17- 12) The first bow that we bought all of them is a Mini-G. It is made by PSE. It is a compound bow.
All 5 of my kids didn’t have a problem with pulling this bow. The arms on it are short, so it is easy for them to maneuver in a bush, or in a tree. It is light weight and easy to set up. With a compound bow, it is not good to do finger release. You will have to take your son to a hunt shop to have him fitted for the draw length of both the bow and a trigger release together.
To hunt white-tailed deer, the minimum pounds allowed is 45lbs. this is for both the US, and Canada.
Good Luck & Hunt Safely
a compond youth bow but i think he is a bit young to bow hunt i would question his ability to pull enough pounds to hunt
