Eli P asked: Sorry for all the questions, but I really only have experience shooting squirrels with my dad’s air-rifle. I live in Texas and I plan on going hunting next year and I am trying to get all my stuff together so I know what I am getting into ahead of time. Rather have a year of planning and learning about what I need as far as knowledge and equipment.
I only want to hunt things that I will eat. This consists of deer, javelina(wild boar), turkey, goose, duck, rabbit and quail.
I want a multi-purpose shotgun that can cover the whole spectrum. I know for sure I want a 12 gauge Semi-auto (can’t stand a pump action) if at all possible under $600.
From what I have read, ammo has a lot to do with it. I know I will want to use a slug for deer and javelina. But does it matter on the size of the pellets when hunting various other game? And since I plan on eating what I kill, should I use lead-free ammo?
Any other helpful information, by all means let me know, whether it is general hunting tips or specific tips for certain game.

LeftyC asked: By the way you answer this, it will reveal your religious or non- religious belief system.
The sixth commandment denounces killing (without a cause)
How can someone go deer hunting and kill one, considering that the following expenses far outway the value of providing food for your family:
Purchase of gun(s),
license,
tags,
equipment,
hunting lease,
gasoline,
and lodging.
Dear “Ent”- Thanks for doing the math for your particular family. -
Dear Robot – lol — “Eat me?”
Dear “jaree” – I am flabbergasted by your response. – Sometimes on our 360 network we have have debates, I want you on my side when we have those debates. — great input.
PS to Jaree, this doesn’t mean I buy the whole enchilada, but I like some of your logic.

starlightrap asked: My son hunts with both rifle and bow. He hunts deer but has been given a Christmas “hunt for elk”. Is there any equipment he would be grateful to have for this hunt? He wants to try and get the elk with his bow and mentioned arrows but I know nothing about them. I can’t afford an expensive rifle but maybe I could find a used one. Any help from experienced hunters would be appreciated.

knightinsoularmor asked: A buddy and I have been shooting rifles for years but have never really gone hunting. We both have well-maintained 30-06’s but don’t have much else for equipment. What equipment do you recommend to get started hunting deer? (We live in East TX btw).

Matty Two Times asked: I’m going hunting in way upstate New York (deer hunting mostly but we’re going after anything from squirrels to black bears), and I need to know what I should bring. I have most of the generic equipment, guns (.30-06 and 12 gauge), ammo, camo, scent-lok, extra layers, etc, but is there anything else I need? More importantly, this is my first time hunting, and I need advice on how to be a better hunter. Help.

siegheil_neocon asked: I went to Cabela’s recently and did some research by browsing the sections.
I would have to purchase a Remington hunting rifle (probably model 700 with a better quality scope) and correct ammo to pass the hunter ed course to receive a license, but I need to figure out the wear and equipment for wilderness exploring and successful hunting. Please correct the listing with the additional items for a good hunting experience without obstacle and confusion.
Camo jacket and pant (thicker for winter, lighter for spring/summer), shooting gloves, hunting boots with outdoor socks, cap or wool hat, expedition compass watch, binocular/spotting scope, camo backpack (e.g. Camelbak Ranger with hydration), large game bag, rope to drag hunted deer, measuring weight and points, knifes for field dressing, ration & instant warming kits, optional gps device, optional digital camera…
During the winter, is it wise to wear the bright orange vest and/or cap to warn other hunters nearby?
rancy c, LOL. I said “optional” gps, I’ve seen the expensive brands like Garmin eTrex Vista HCX. I don’t mean to list every thing that I intend to buy, just trying to get down to basics. I dunno if a binocular is necessary at all. 1st I pass hunter ed course and practice rifle shooting in hundreds of rounds at outdoors range then I will get hand on it, and I will contact a fellow hunter to join the expedition. It’ll take a few months before I’m ready, so it’s best to prepare with some experience gained before progressing on to big game (if lucky to win in lottery) in a few years if I stick with it.

Blackstroke asked: It costs a fortune to go hunting these days. All the equipment you have to buy, the license, etc. Then they only limit what you can hunt and when. And when a car hits a deer and the 2 kids inside the car die, what do the authorities say? NOT ENOUGH HUNTERS!!!! YOU THINK!!!

strunbike asked: Farmers who grow crops (grains, leaves, roots, fruits, vegetables) get multiple deer tags for hunting season. Combines and various farm equipment kill animals from mice to racoons, rabbits to pheasant. The babies and eggs of these adult animals get crushed and killed.
I am NOT against vegans, or their diet. You eat what you want. I realize that these creatures die to support my diet. Just please stop pretending that you are doing so much good for the environment, and for animals. Your diet supports the killing of these animals. Understand it, and deal with it. Stop lying to yourselves. You live in a modern culture of convenience. That is the only reason you can eat the way you do. It really has nothing to do with feeling bad about killing animals. Animals are killed anyway. Those who have conditions that require them to be vegan, 100 years ago, would have had a rough time finding a diet with anything close to a variety of food. What do healthy people die from?
