deer baiting?

***In all seriousness. I concur with JD on this one. Baiting is a bad idea. Not only becuase of sportsmanship issues, but some of the bait can become tainted, if you use enough you could make an impact on the ecology etc.

I am one of those that don’t agree with the use of baiting in any form. Hunters have managed to bag game for decades before there was even a thought of baiting Deer or using “attractants”. It is legal in a few states but the majority of states don’t allow it in any form. It isn’t about fighting. I think thats a foolish analogy for even suggesting that. It’s just a difference of opinion, based on your own personal feelings and definition of personal sportsmanship. Nothing more, nothing less

I don’t bait but actually don’t have much opinion on it, other than semantics. I sure don’t fight about it.
If you are putting out food (and/or baiting agents), you are a “Rancher” and not a “Hunter”. Nothing wrong with ranching, some of my best friends are ranchers.

baiting will only draw deer into the area. you still need good hunting skills to see deer. i dont care what kind of super duper bait you use, if your skills are lacking you will still spook the deer. i see nothing wrong with using things like corn, apples, mineral blocks etc. to attrack deer.

Using bait is not a bad thing.
Lots of hunters do not have the time or ability to get out there and scout hunting spots. Some guys are truly weekend hunters these days. They don’t have time away from work or the family’s daily issues to go outdoors. Also the expense of traveling to and from the woods to hunt. I myself spend 30 dollars in fuel each time I travel north to the national forest. I spent 120 dollars on fuel alone last month. And these were half day only trips to check my feeders and game cameras. And this was between church and the family Sunday dinner.
Also not all hunters have free land to hunt on such as national forests. These hunters use bait and feeding as a way to increase seeing deer and also increasing the nutrition for the deer they manage.
There are as many reasons that hunters use bait as there are reasons not too.
And one point the self righteous “non” bait users don’t talk about. I use bait corn but nothing else. In non baiting states they sell and use other attractants don’t they? I doubt the Indians used doe in heat urine or immature buck scent! So be a true sportsman if you don’t bait. Put away your cover scents and bait scents and all your other “help”.

Every year someone still brings up the baiting issue to stir the stew pot!
I am not for bringing in tons of carrots, sugar beets and sweet potatoes and dumping them just to sit over and hunt but if this is legal in a state and someone can then they have the right to do it!
The main concern of baiting is to feed deer(and other animals) and getting them accustomed to the bait and having troubles with the natural feeding patterns.When natural foods are low bait piles are hit hard and can help supplement during harsh winters!But this can also cause troubles by not supplying the proper nutrition to the deer and them relying on bait to feed on during harsh times.Then if they lack good nutrition they have a harder time during the winters.
Food plots help our deer year round when there is a bad mast year of natural foods!
But would you consider this baiting?
How about hunting corn fields where there is corn on the ground or even un picked corn!!
How about hunting over a tree laden with acorns or one heavy with persimmons or apples?
My point to this is that if legal and you want to bait it is OK with me and if you don’t want to then don’t do it!
Baiting is very different from supplementing food but hey what about doe estrus urine’s or natural attractants doesn’t that lure(bait) deer into an area too!

If i could, i would. The CWD (Chronic Wasting Diease) is bad here in IL, so they dont allow baiting. the theory is that if there is an attractant around, all the deer in the area will be there, and it will spread CWD faster. and as Injun said, it messes up there natural feeding habits. If i could bait them legally, i wouldnt have a problem with it.

I really don’t bait either,I do bring a couple apples into my deer blind with me and cut them up,puts an apple scent in my blind,plus after awhile I eat em,but there is enough corn fields and such around me that I don’t hafta bait.The nice thing about living on a very large chunk of land is that I can watch deer movement year around,

texas needs to put out corn or deer feed. dome of the areas are so barren that you will never see the deer.the feeding of nutrients will keep the deer healthy thru the very hot summers.some places re very thick and too hard to track. you can set up a feeder so the deer will come out of the thick stuff..many areas of texas has great habitat but very few deer.that is like what i hunt.you can sit all season and never see a deer. when you put out corn it helps a little. be advised just because you put out feed does not mean you will see anything.—retired texas deputy sheriff—

Baiting is not allowed in Colorado but the wise hunter takes advantage of natural bait by marking on a map or GPS places that contain food favored by deer or elk. In the fall when deer season starts the animals are eating constantly to bulk up with fat to last them through the winter season of less food. Scouting the area while camping in the late summer will give you an idea of where the big game will come for food and shelter. Also if you hunt on private property and the farmer/rancher has cattle. Watch for the salt blocks that land owners put out for their stock and use that as a bait. Pick a stand within sight of the well traveled trail to that block.
