Deer Hunting–Rifles and Scopes?

ASDF12345ASDF12345 asked:

I want to get started deer hunting. I have been looking for a rifle and a little bit at scopes. I want to find a rifle that is a good gun and light on my wallet. Something maybe around 4-6 hundred, also, something maybe either bolt-action or pump.

Price on a scope isn’t that important to me, I know someone who works for Bushnell and could get me one for cheap. What would be a good scope for Whitetail deer hunting and maybe a little Coyote hunting!? I want something I can use at 180 and upclose.

What do you think?

For the rifle, I’d go with a .243. Remington and Mossberg have great guns in that price range.
I have a Remington 700 carbine in .243 with a 3x-10x by 50mm scope. 50mm gives fantastic low light shooting capability and a wide field of view. I put it on “see thru” mounts, and have taken deer at 25′ using the iron sights through these mounts.

Look at the Savage line. Inexpensive,a little ugly but very accurate.
a 3x9x40 scope would be a good choice in my opinion.

Look at the Savage combo packages in.243 with a Simmons 3×9 scope for around $450 to 500. Mine is a tack driver at 100 yds.

.270 Remington accurate, flat trajectory. plenty of knock down power
Busnell makes a good scope, 10x should suffice

I think it’s pretty sad. How about night vision and a grenade to kill those deer and dogs – it would REALLY show your superiority over them that you can’t achieve with humans.

  6. For the rifle, look at either a Savage or a Marlin. They are both light on the wallet and very, very good. If you are looking at something good for coyotes up to deer (or bigger, I’m guessing) the .30-06 is the do-all round for North America. The only hesitation I have with that is if you are a beginning shooter the .30-06 may recoil a bit much, and you could develop a flinch. Either use Remington Managed Recoil loads, or get a .308 (which is about 10% less powerful than a .30-06, but kicks significantly less).

As far as the scope goes, look at the Elite series scopes – probably a 3×9-40. My experience with 2 Bushnell Trophy series is that they fog pretty badly during wet weather. The Elites are the top of the line Bushnells. A scope is not a place to scrimp.

  7. Savage bolt action package in 7mm-08. This bullet is heavier than a .243 but the recoil is very similar. I have 3 7mm-08s in my safe. I would also recommend a Thompson Center Encore and you can change calibers.

I use a Savage 30-06 topped with a Leupold VX-II 3-9X40 scope. The rifle, which I got as a combo from my dad, came with a Simmons 8-Point scope. I wanted to put a little better scope on. It was bought used for $390. The Leupold was given to me by my dad, and it cost about $299.

    >270 remington- best low cost all around great rifle. Kill coyotes, deer, elk, antelope, prarie dogs, even liberals, if you wanted. I have two, a Ruger M-77 and a Remington 721. Leaupold scope, bipods, and a 1.5 lb trigger-anythng I want to kill within 700-800yds that I want to kill, is as good as dead. The 130gr hornady intrabond is a great round, flat shooting, 2800fps, 97%wiegth retention, and it will put anything on the ground. Absolutly my choice for a round above everything else. 2nd choice 7mm mag.

I would personally recommend the Winchester M94 along with a 243 Winchester caliber for start. It is advisable not to spend a lot of money on the first rifle as this one will be more like a practice one.

As far as scopes is concerned, Bushnell is a good manufacturer so any model will do just fine, but don’t spend over 300 U.S. dollars for it as you won’t need a very sophisticated model, a 9X scope is perfect for deer hunting.

Hope this helps. Best of luck to you.
