Fox hunting tips and advice?

jhersh85 asked:

I have some experience hunting. I have hunted small game and some dove and have also hunted deer during gun season but now I am interested in fox hunting and would also like to go on a coyote hunt as well (coyote’s are ruining the rabbit hunting in the areas and are very populated). What advice do you have for a new fox hunter in North-Eastern Ohio? What time of day or night is best and what type of location is best? I am currenlty planning to use my Marlin .22 mag with scope as my only other rifle is a 30-06 and way to powerfully as I would imagine – do you think the .22 mag is good enough and what rounds would you recommend to get max range and killing power but preserve the fur? Do you have any advice on fox behavior and how to call them? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
I will hunting Red Fox

You should probably specify what type of fox. Red or grey. I trap them and pursue them with hound but they do respond well to sight bait so when calling use a turkey wing hanging from a branch or something like it. Call loud at first then tune it down most people call too loud too often.

.22 mag will kill a fox. Ohio is like Michigan hunt the hedgerow at dusk and dawn, use a call. Hunting with red lights at night I have not done sorry.

.22 mag will do it…but foxes are wary….if you can use centerfire .223 or .22 hornet or similar class calibers will give a bit more range.

if you use a .22 LR or Mag…solid bullets save hide… Hollow points can be a little tuff on pelts.

G-day m8, im an aussie and have been hunting foxes for quite a few years. First bit of advice i could give you is that foxes are extremely cunning so as a first time hunter of foxes dont try to outsmart them! theyll have you ends up! A .22 mag is the ideal gun for foxes, good range, small damage and not as loud as typical fox rifles, 22-250 .204, 223 etc. A whistle is something a fox hunter should have, button whistle etc but my favourite the tenterfield whistle. Sunsets are always the best time to find young and curious foxes and easy to get. but the aid of a spotlight at night is when you will see most. Bullets- Remington Accu-tip 35 grain. good penetration. Rolling hilly country is best for whistling. that should help , have fun!

When hunting during the early morning and at dusk a 22 mag. will do the trick if you place your shot correctly. Aim for the head or shoulder. Otherwise you’ll most likely never find the fox. At night i use a 12 gauge shotgun with #4 shot 3″ mags. When hunting at night your best time is from dark till 10 and then from 3am till early morning. You will need a red light(doesn’t have to be extremely bright). And some sort of predator caller. I personally use a mouth call or a foxpro(which is an electronic caller). Each place you decide to set up at you should only stay for about 20 minutes to an half hour. Any other questions just ask I’ll try and answer them.
